Sunaayy Foundation has, since May 2009, been implementing a pilot project that involves imparting basic education to 50 children in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. The children, aged 3 to12, attend outdoor makeshift classes held each day between 10am and 1pm at an MCD park. They are divided into study groups based on their physical, intellectual and learning abilities, and taught accordingly.
Basics of reading and writing in Hindi and English as well as Arithmetic are covered through interactive methods in these classes. Also included in the sessions are physical education, personal hygiene, social sciences and art and craft.
Classes end each day with the provision of a healthy snack that the children consume before going home. The children help in keeping the park clean, and also assist in setting up and dismantling the classroom each day, instilling a sense of pride and responsibility in them.Sunaayy also provides summer and winter uniforms for each child.
Two regular teaching staff, three attendants and volunteers assist the Sunaayy Foundation in its work.Other activities include educational field trips to museums or places of historical interest to encourage curiosity, awareness and learning. Annual medical camps have been conducted in the past, for children as well as their parents. Sunaayy also works closely with parents, inspiring them to enroll their children in regular schools.
